Let’s Learn About… Septic Pumping

Rex Vault Blog

Septic systems are usually out of sight out of mind for most people, until a problem arises! Regular maintenance is the best way to keep your tank working correctly. We provide inspection and service to aeration systems and recommend that both conventional and aeration septic tanks be pumped every 3-5 years.

Some questions about septic pumping to consider are:

  • When was the last time your tank was pumped? If you aren’t sure, it is time to get an inspection done and possible pumping if necessary.
  • How big is your septic tank? Septic tanks are often based on the size of your home, which can impact how often your tank will need pumped. Smaller tanks may need to be pumped more frequently.
  • How often is your system in use? The number of people in your home can affect how often your septic tank will need pumped. More water waste (Dishes, Laundry, Cleaning, etc.) will affect your system. The more strain your system goes through, the more likely it will need to be pumped sooner!
  • Why is pumping important? Pumping your septic tank keeps your septic system healthy. Without pumping your tank, you risk the sludge and scum building up to the point that it affects the overall functionality of your tank. This can lead to your septic system failing.
  • Have you added bacteria and enzymes to your tank? Without bacteria, your septic tank would likely clog quickly. Bacteria and enzymes help break down solids that could get backed up in your septic tank. We offer ProPump Live Bacteria to help with the maintenance of a septic tank and promote helpful bacteria growth.
  • Are you using cleaning chemicals? While chemicals serve their purpose to keep your home clean, you want to be careful as you use them to make sure you’re not killing off helpful bacteria. Limit the bacteria-killing agents and chemicals going down your drains and your tank should be able to produce more bacteria naturally and prevent clogging.

These factors can give you an idea on when to get your tank pumped, but it can be impossible to know for sure unless you get an inspection.
